Well, this is Magoo. He was second born of our litter. Magoo was the first to open his eyes.
Edit: The image originally is 6x6inches.
With this one, alot of experimentation happened. First, lacking softer lead, I attempted to use charcoal pencils. I achieved darkness, but it was messy. By halfway through, the drawing was looking fairly pathetic. A trip across the border to a real art store, found me with 4b and 6b lead, holders, sharpener and all. I also picked up a white charcoal and white prismacolor verithin pencils. I was one happy girl with my bag of pencils! (talk about easy to please? heh) The charcoal is very nice under certain conditions, the verithins were hopeless mixed with existing lead. The image began to recover. The reference was a photo I took, the fingers from yet another photo and shading from the live model of my hands.
Edit: Utterly dissatisfied with my results, and having reworked it twice only to realize that the paper is completely inappropriate for the soft, grainless shading I was going for...I brought this piece into photoshop to soften and blend a little further. I just couldn't leave be! I also realized that the crappy scanner really shows itself with the dark drawings. Time to invest in a new one!
Thanks to for inspiring me to darken it further with the pencils!
I can't say I am very happy with it, but it was a learning project and boy did I learn alot! I hope you enjoy it!
90lb paper, hb, b, 2b, 4b, 6b pencils, mechanical. 4b and 6b charchoal pencils, along with a white charcoal pencil. Blending stump, tissue paper, cotton swabs and qtips. Kneaded eraser.
It was a tough project to begin with, all that dark fur and black background..a challenge for me, but made only worse by all that experimentation. Also, I usually scan my work in, so I can view it on the computer. Somehow this clears up that artist block I have so I can fix errors before its too late. I've tried turning the book all around and moving around the room, but the scan is much more effective for me. I refused to scan this one in, and only too late saw where my mistakes were. Heh. Mistake mostly, I titled his head further then it was, which threw off alot of the composition.
Thanks for the comments!

You might be an artist if you...
-everything you see can be reduced to shapes -lighting is not just functional, its essential -everywhere you look, a new piece is waiting to be drawn, sculpted, painted or photographed. -are OCD about art -daydream.
I think you've done an excellent job, the fur looks very real and that tiny creature is so cute! I like it a lot. And thanks for sharing your experience.
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.

There is no time to be perfect. Life is too short to care about perfection.
